Improving your level of self-care
5 things to improve my level of self-care within the next 4 weeks
This is Part Two of the BURNOUT series.
Start at PART 1 Burnout - not just a slang term
While there is no standard definition for the term burnout, Freudenberger, considered to have first used the term, described it as “failing, wearing out or becoming exhausted through excessive demands on energy, strength and resources”. Another definition by Maslach is that burnout is a “syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment…”.
If this sounds like a place you are headed, or where you might be right now, or if you know someone in this situation then hope is not lost. You can turn things around and with a little change of priority and perspective you can find the balance that you need to become whole and well balanced once again.
Wellness is not a one-stop shop or something you can do today with 100% of your effort and expect it to last for the rest of your life. It takes a conscious and deliberate choice to take action towards a well balanced schedule and a life of inner peace and wellness.
Today we have libraries and bookstores full to the brim of books and magazines with overflowing with self-help articles and practices. The only problem is, that in our busy schedule who has the time to flip through all the material and find a resource that works for us, and who then has the energy to design a program that works for us and then follow through with the text that is on the page? Not many of us, and it is my deepest and sincerest wish that you find some benefit from this article and a positive and clear path to start your new journey.
We make choices everyday of our lives from the moment we open our eyes in the morning we choose whether or not to get out of bed, what to wear, will we go to work, what to eat, coffee or tea, etc, etc. All day long we make unconscious and conscious choices that impact our lives and our future direction. I am offering you a chance to make a choice right now. You can read this article, find it of interest but then push it to the side and make unconscious choice to continue on your current path towards burnout (if you are indeed at that point in your life). Or you can read this article, find it of interest and make a conscious choice to be proactive in your future direction, make one small change today that will impact the current cycle of your life in a positive way. That one small step can have an amazing flow on effect to all aspects of your life.
Knowledge versus action
I recognise that most of you who read this article will ‘know’ about burnout. You also probably know how to set personal boundaries, how to undertake self care and acknowledge that speaking out about your difficulties is a powerful way to lessen your burden. I also recognise however, and I encourage you to do the same, that there is a world of difference between knowing what to do, and actually doing it!! This is one reason why I became a life coach, to help people stay on the path of action.
So, how do you cross the gap between being knowing, and being active? Firstly we must identify where you are positioned currently in the cycle.
List the five most important, specific accomplishments you want to make, and intend to take on, within the next four weeks to improve your level of self care.
